Japanese candlesticks are one of the most popular methods for analyzing price action in forex markets. Let’s break down their components to better understand how they provide valuable insights into market movements.

Candlestick Body

The candlestick body represents the opening and closing prices during a specific trading period.

  • Long Bodies: These signify strong buying or selling pressure. The greater the length, the more dominant the buyers (bullish candlestick) or sellers (bearish candlestick) are.
    • Long Bullish (Green) Body: Indicates that buyers controlled the session, significantly pushing prices up from the open.
    • Long Bearish (Red) Body: Suggests that sellers were in control, driving prices significantly lower from the opening.
  • Short Bodies: Indicate limited market movement and balanced buying and selling activity, reflecting market indecision.

Candlestick Shadows (Wicks)

The thin lines extending from the candlestick body are called shadows or wicks, representing the highest and lowest prices during the trading session.

  • Upper Shadow: Shows the session’s highest traded price.
  • Lower Shadow: Marks the session’s lowest traded price.
  • Long Shadows: Suggest significant trading activity occurred far beyond the open and close prices.
    • Long Upper Shadow: Indicates that buyers pushed the price significantly higher, but sellers regained control and drove prices back down towards the opening price.
    • Long Lower Shadow: Reflects sellers pushing prices much lower, but buyers stepping in strongly to close near the opening price.
  • Short Shadows: Suggest most trading activity was concentrated near the open and close prices, indicating less volatility during the session.

Key Takeaways

  • Long green candlesticks indicate bullish strength.
  • Long red candlesticks show strong bearish sentiment.
  • Candlesticks with long shadows suggest price rejection at higher or lower levels.
  • Short-bodied candlesticks with minimal shadows imply low volatility and indecision.

Understanding candlestick anatomy allows traders to quickly gauge market sentiment and potential future price movements, enhancing trading decision-making.
